Ministries
Metropolitan's ministries are designed to offer
opportunities for spiritual growth and development, to
share blessings, and to provide service and perpetuate
the spirit of Christ by words and by deeds.
Church School
Conducts Bible-based classes for persons of all ages each Sunday morning.
Commission on Christian Education.
Promotes Christian education describing its application in daily living;
makes careful study of Christian education needs of the
local church; and promotes and develops initiatives to
meet these needs.
Commission on Public Relations
Gathers and disseminates information of public
interest about the church to secular and religious
media. Responsible for intra-congregational
communications and the public image of the church.
Commission on Missions and Welfare
Helps identify and meet the needs of the community.
Ethel P. Hall Club
Purchases pew Bibles and hymnals. Provide financial support to the church.
Florigia Club
Consists mainly of senior citizens whose familial roots are in Florida and
Georgia. The club supports the church financially,
promotes friendliness in the church and assists the
youth and senior citizens.
Ladies Guild of Metropolitan
Provides opportunities for the cultural enrichment of church members and friends
through travel, participation in the Arts, reading, and
community outreach service. Provides financial support
to the church.
Married Couples Ministry
Aims to facilitate the spiritual growth of married couples through Bible study,
annual retreats, community outreach, and special events.
This ministry has developed programs and activities that
assist in strengthening a God-centered and spirit-led
marriage.
Media Ministry (Audio/Video Unit, Duplication Unit and
Information Technology (IT) Unit)
Operates the audio and video control room; produces and duplicates copies of
events recorded at the church and provides information
technology support to the church.
Metropolitan Legal Ministry
Provides information of legal concerns to the congregation that may affect their
lives; helps members to obtain information to solve
specific legal problems; and assists members in
obtaining legal counsel to address various issues.
Mighty Men of Metropolitan (MMM – Men's Ministry)
Provides opportunities for men to unite in giving their time, talent, and resources
to the church and community. Men come together for
fellowship and spiritual growth, promoting strong family
relationships and presenting positive Christian role
models for the children of the church.
Music Ministry
Cathedral ChoirSince its founding, the
Cathedral Choir of the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church has
been the Senior Choir of the Cathedral of African
Methodism. This choir may be heard at the 11:00 AM
worship service each first and fourth Sunday. The
Cathedral Choir plays a major role not only within the
music ministry of the Church, but the greater community
as well. While the choir's involvement in outreach
activity is notable, and highly anticipated by the
Metropolitan area, its ministry within the Church is
total.
Metro Aires ChoirLeads the 11:00 AM Sunday service in musical worship, usually on the second and
fifth Sundays. The choir accompanies the senior pastor
for worship services at various churches.
Metropolitan Mighty Men's ChoirProvides the opportunity for approximately 30 males to unite in praising the Lord
in music on the fourth and fifth Sundays at the 7:30 AM
worship service; performs at other venues.
Progressive Club
Reaches out and acknowledges club members and their families on
birthdays and holidays.
Robert R. and Ora B. Kelly Lay Organization
Instills love and appreciation for the history, tradition and principles
of African Methodism. The organization promotes support
of the total church program by fostering systemic and
regular study; provides information regarding the church
and denomination; and encourages participation in the
total church. The Lay organization complements the
church's ministries/commissions, and auxiliaries by
supporting their efforts, as well as instituting its own
activities to raise funds for the administration of
church functions.
Sarah Allen Missionary Society
Provides mission service to members of the church and community, fosters
missionary activities, and contributes financially to the church.
Second Board of Stewards
Comforts the bereaved, maintains contacts with the sick and shut-in members
through calls and monthly mailing of cards, and carries
out special projects assigned by the Senior Pastor.
Senior Board of Stewards
Serves as the spiritual leaders of the church.
Sisters of the Covenant (Women's Ministry)
Embraces adult women and young girls of the church and community. Attention is on
spiritual growth, empowerment, and nurturing, as well as
community outreach.
Sons and Daughters of Allen
Perpetuates both the study and celebration of the church and its legacy, and of
African American history and heritage. Provides
financial support to the church.
South Carolina Club
Promotes the well-being of
the church by involving and establishing an organized
fellowship with church members who have a connection to
the state of South Carolina; provides financial support
to the church.
Stewardess Board
Fannie Skinner, Stewardess Board
Dresses the pulpit, chancery, and altar rail for Holy Communion, Baptism,
funerals and memorials, as well as for the various
liturgical seasons.
Usher Ministry
Senior Usher BoardServes as doorkeepers and provides a friendly atmosphere for members and visitors
as they enter the church. The board also develops
programs and events involving all ushers in the church;
provides support to persons in need in the community
through independent and joint efforts of the
Interdenominational Church Ushers Association (ICUA) of
Washington, DC and Vicinity, Inc.
Young Adult Usher BoardServes as doorkeepers during the 11:00 AM worship service on the third and
fifth Sundays, and quarterly on the first Sunday.
Young Adult Ministries (YAMS)
Engages young adults between the ages of 18 and 35 in an interactive ministry
to encourage their participation in the Church. The goal
of the Young Adult Ministry is to produce leaders in the
Church who are grounded in the Word of God. This
ministry responds to counseling needs and encourages the
young adults to participate in activities.
Youth Ministries
Focuses on the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and economical development of
young adults and youth in the church and the community.
