Since our founding, in 1838, we have been spreading Christ’s liberating gospel in Washington, DC through our various ministries and outreach. The church has also had an historic voice in the lives of black people and others throughout the nation and world.

Haiti in Our Hearts

Metropolitan A.M.E. Church hosted “Haiti in Our Hearts: A Community Fundraiser for Haiti,” on Wednesday, January 20 at its historic sanctuary located at 1518 M St. NW. The event was organized by the Young Adult Restoration Network and featured music, prayer and testimony from local Haitian-Americans affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The event also included a display and silent auction of Haitian art, courtesy of Fritz Racine and International Visions Gallery.

Haiti in Our Hearts

Metropolitan A.M.E. Church will host “Haiti in Our Hearts: A Community Fundraiser for Haiti,” on Wednesday, January 20 at its historic sanctuary located at 1518 M St. NW. The event, free and open to the public, will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by a program at 7 p.m. featuring music, prayer and testimony from local Haitian-Americans affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

The event will also include a display and silent auction of Haitian art, courtesy of Fritz Racine and International Visions Gallery.

The Right Rev. Adam J. Richardson, Presiding Prelate 2nd Episcopal District African Methodist Episcopal Church was our guest preacher on January 3, 2009.

Adam J. Richardson, Jr. was elected and consecrated the 115th Bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1996 at Louisville, Kentucky. He was assigned to the 14th Episcopal District which includes six countries in West Africa. In the 2000 – 2004 quadrennial, he served as chair of the Lay Commission, member of the World Methodist Council, and as the Presiding Bishop of the 19th Episcopal District with headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Restoration

A commemorative ceremony for the temporary removal of the unique 123-year-old Episcopacy Window of the AME denomination recently launched the start of a $10 million restoration project at Metropolitan AME. Church. Metropolitan, which was built by recently freed slaves, is known as “The Cathedral of African Methodism" because it is shrouded in the unique history of the A.M.E.denomination. The church has also had an historic voice in the lives of black people and others throughout the nation and world.

 

The African Methodist Episcopal Church

The African Methodist Episcopal Church has a unique and glorious history. It was unique in that it is the first major religious denomination in the Western World that had its origin over sociological and theological beliefs and differences. It rejected the negative theological interpretations which rendered persons of African descent second class citizens. Theirs was a theological declaration that God is God all the time and for every body. The church was born in protest against slavery—against dehumanization of African people, brought to the American continent as labor. Read more…
